Gossip Girl star Leighton Meester is suing her mother, Constance Meester, for misusing money that Leighton had sent to care for her younger brother Lex, who has medical problems. In a twist that sounds like it's ripped from the scheming Upper East Side world of Gossip Girl, Leighton claims that her mom has instead been using the funds to pay for cosmetic surgery for herself!
According to legal papers obtained by TMZ, Meester, 25, had been sending her mother a monthly check of $7,500 to be used expressly for her brother Lex, who has medical issues. However, the suit claims that Constance has been using the money for Botox, hair extensions and other plastic surgery procedures.
According to the lawsuit, Constance had tried to convince Leighton that the two had an oral contract saying that Leighton would be required to pay her pay her $10,000 a month for life. Leighton disputes this claim and says there is no contract. Constance, in turn, had threatened to sue her daughter for $3 million if Leighton didn't raise the monthly allowance to $10,000. (That's a lot of Botox.) Leighton filed her lawsuit in the hopes that the judge will declare that there is no contract between her and her mother.
A source tells People, "This whole thing's been really tough on Leighton. Her only concern has always been taking care of her brother."
Constance Meester has had a checkered past, giving birth to Leighton while in a Texas halfway house, after being convicted in the 1980s of helping a drug ring smuggle marijuana into the United States from Jamaica. Earlier this year, a woman won a restraining order against Constance after being allegedly harassed by her.
While relations are obviously strained with her mother, Leighton is very close to other members of her family. "Her only concern has always been taking care of her brother," the same inside source tells People. "Leighton's really close with her brother and her dad -- her parents are divorced. Leighton's a sweet girl -- she cares about work, friends and family."
